Colonel Perk<strong>in</strong>s’ bold decisionto stay downtown clearly drove <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al nail <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> regime’s coff<strong>in</strong>. With soldiers and mar<strong>in</strong>esable to move at will throughout <strong>the</strong> city, <strong>the</strong> regime evaporated.The F<strong>in</strong>al Fight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Baghdad—3rd BCT In TITANSWhile <strong>the</strong> media focused on Colonel Perk<strong>in</strong>s’ Spartan Brigade as it conducted its thunderruns, Colonel Allyn’s Hammer Brigade fought perhaps <strong>the</strong> most <strong>in</strong>tense urban battle <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>entire campaign. Although <strong>the</strong> 3rd BCT’s area of operations on <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn outskirts of <strong>the</strong>city seemed calm <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early even<strong>in</strong>g of 7 April, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iraqi</strong>s mounted a major counterattack justafter dark. Colonel Allyn later thought <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iraqi</strong>s were attempt<strong>in</strong>g to break out of Baghdad—orat least to open Highway 1 as an escape route for o<strong>the</strong>r forces still with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. 121When <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iraqi</strong>s began shell<strong>in</strong>g soldiers on Objectives ROMMEL and MONTY, 1-10 FAlashed back with counterfires. The compet<strong>in</strong>g explosions reverberated back and forth across<strong>the</strong> river. The objectives were close enough to each o<strong>the</strong>r that soldiers on one objective couldsee and hear <strong>the</strong> rounds land<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. 122 The <strong>Iraqi</strong>s followed up <strong>the</strong>ir barrage with acomb<strong>in</strong>ed-arms attack at Objective MONTY, us<strong>in</strong>g tanks, BMPs, and dismounted Infantry.Unfortunately for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iraqi</strong>s, C/1-15 IN, Hard Rock, at ROMMEL observed <strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong>ymoved sou<strong>the</strong>astward along <strong>the</strong> opposite riverbank. Hard Rock’s fire support team engagedwith <strong>in</strong>direct fires and sent reports that alerted <strong>the</strong> men of A/2-69 AR on <strong>the</strong> bridge at Objective374
