They exploited <strong>the</strong>ir relationships with<strong>the</strong> planners at <strong>the</strong> 82nd and 101st, most of <strong>the</strong>m classmates or fellow graduates of SAMS,to keep <strong>the</strong> divisions <strong>in</strong>formed of future plann<strong>in</strong>g requirements. Before receiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> CFLCCfragmentary order to release <strong>the</strong> 82nd, <strong>the</strong> corps and divisions had collectively conducted amission analysis, developed a course of action, and wargamed it aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> threat. CFLCCreleased <strong>the</strong> 82nd at midnight on 26 March, and Wallace approved <strong>the</strong> plan for employmentearly that same morn<strong>in</strong>g. 160The corps issued <strong>the</strong> FRAGO that day, and <strong>the</strong> divisions started execut<strong>in</strong>g. The 101stwas already favorably positioned at FARP SHELL to execute its mission around An Najaf,with one brigade on site and ano<strong>the</strong>r clos<strong>in</strong>g while <strong>the</strong> third completed its deployment <strong>in</strong>to<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ater. As soon as its brigades closed, <strong>the</strong> 101st could relieve 3rd ID. The 82nd, on <strong>the</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r hand, was not favorably postured or located, but <strong>the</strong> paratroopers moved with fiercedeterm<strong>in</strong>ation to get <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> fight sooner ra<strong>the</strong>r than later. Apparently, to meet <strong>the</strong> missiontimel<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>the</strong> 82nd <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>the</strong> preparatory actions to move north even before <strong>the</strong> CFLCCreleased <strong>the</strong> order. 161 The division derigged equipment that had been prepared for an airbornedrop and moved by ground assault convoy (GAC) and C-130 aircraft. The paratroopers senteveryone with a driver’s license to Camp ARIFIJAN, where <strong>the</strong>y drew a menagerie of trucksrang<strong>in</strong>g from cargo to dump trucks to haul <strong>the</strong> troops. Meanwhile <strong>the</strong>y started mov<strong>in</strong>g, us<strong>in</strong>gtwo C 130s that were available to make quick turns between Kuwait and Tallil Air Base. Us<strong>in</strong>gthis comb<strong>in</strong>ation, <strong>the</strong> last units of <strong>the</strong> brigade reached As Samawah on 29 March. 162All of this activity occurred dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> so-called pause, but it constituted exactly <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dof activity consistent with a pause designed to build combat power and prepare for futureoperations.
