The C SANDF providedeffective strategic direction and command and controlover the SANDF.The Chief <strong>of</strong> the SANDF devoted his efforts during the yearunder review <strong>to</strong>wards advancing defence diplomacy and multilateralinitiatives <strong>of</strong> Government within the multinationalorganisations <strong>of</strong> the African Union (AU) and the SouthernAfrican Development Community (SADC). Internally, theChief <strong>of</strong> the SANDF was fully engaged in the GovernmentProgramme <strong>of</strong> Action requirements, with full participation inthe monthly clusters, as well as the Forum <strong>of</strong> SA Direc<strong>to</strong>rs-General. Military policy advice <strong>to</strong> the Minister and DeputyMinister <strong>of</strong> <strong>Defence</strong> & Military Veterans was a constant andongoing activity.Externally, on average a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> 2 238 members, including148 Reserves, were successfully deployed by J Ops Div intwo Peace Support Operations in the Democratic Republic <strong>of</strong>Congo (DRC) and Sudan, as well as three general militaryassistance operations in the DRC, the Central AfricanRepublic (CAR) and the support <strong>to</strong> the MozambiqueGovernment <strong>to</strong> curb piracy in the Mozambique Channel.Operation TEUTONIC in DRC was successfully completedand terminated at the end <strong>of</strong> Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 2010. The SAArmy successfullytrained 1 780 <strong>Defence</strong> Force members <strong>of</strong> the DRC(FARDC) and handed them over <strong>to</strong> the Minister <strong>of</strong> <strong>Defence</strong> <strong>of</strong>the DRC after completing a planned cycle <strong>of</strong> training inOc<strong>to</strong>ber 2010.Internally, several missions in support <strong>of</strong> other Governmentdepartments continued with the emphasis on safety and securitysupport, search and rescue on sea, land and border safeguarding.A <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> 556 099 man-days were used duringinternal operations. The deployment <strong>of</strong> the SANDF for bordersafeguarding resulted in the apprehension <strong>of</strong> 20 613 illegalimmigrants, 263 criminals were arrested, 21 s<strong>to</strong>len vehicleswere recovered, 14 weapons were recovered, 18 lives<strong>to</strong>ckwere recovered and various narcotics were confiscated including807kg marijuana (dagga), 137g tik-tik and 122 mandraxtablets. The SANDF also provided safety and security supportduring the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the public service strike.During the year under review, the A/C SANDF paid visits <strong>to</strong>ten <strong>Defence</strong> Forces, namely, USA, India, Mozambique, RoyalThai, Congo Brazzaville, Namibia, Lesotho, Peoples Republic<strong>of</strong> China and Indonesia <strong>to</strong> strengthen ties and advance defencediplomacy. The Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Mozambique and Royal ThaiArmed Forces conducted reciprocal visits <strong>to</strong> the Chief <strong>of</strong> theSANDF.In order <strong>to</strong> improve the Command and Control in the SANDF,ANNUAL REPORT FY 2010/2011 45
