D E P A R T M E N T O F D E F E N C EThe Subdivision contributed <strong>to</strong> the promotion <strong>of</strong> the SouthAfrican foreign relation policy by facilitating <strong>Defence</strong>Committee meeting with Germany, the PRC, the USA and theUK, as well as the bilateral Joint Permanent Commissions on<strong>Defence</strong> and Security with respectively Namibia, Zimbabweand Botswana. The Subdivision also facilitated the attendanceby the Minister and a representative <strong>of</strong> C SANDF at the 6thMeeting <strong>of</strong> the African Chiefs <strong>of</strong> <strong>Defence</strong> Staff and Heads <strong>of</strong>Security in Addis Ababa. At the same time, the 4th OrdinaryMeeting <strong>of</strong> the Specialised Technical Committee on <strong>Defence</strong>,Safety and Security met and was attended by a SANDF representative.The <strong>Defence</strong> Attachés supported the SA <strong>Defence</strong>Related Industry abroad through the facilitation <strong>of</strong> trade meetings.In order <strong>to</strong> provide strategic direction, staff teams visited various<strong>Defence</strong> Attaché <strong>of</strong>fices abroad, these <strong>of</strong>fices includedEthiopia, Vietnam, Kenya and the DRC.The DOD VIP Lounge at the O.R. Tambo InternationalAirport continued <strong>to</strong> render a service <strong>to</strong> the members <strong>of</strong> theDOD and visiting foreign delegations. About 1 346 personsmoved through the lounge.During September 2010, the biennual African Aerospace and<strong>Defence</strong> Exposition was co-hosted with the SA <strong>Defence</strong>Industry. The Subdivision was responsible for coordinatingthe Foreign Visi<strong>to</strong>rs Programme whereby seventeen Ministers<strong>of</strong> <strong>Defence</strong> six Chiefs <strong>of</strong> <strong>Defence</strong> force; seven Chiefs <strong>of</strong>Army; 21 Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Air force; seven Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Navy and twoSurgeons General and/or their representatives were hostedduring the <strong>Defence</strong> Industry Exposition.During the year under review, the Subdivision focused on thepreparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Defence</strong> Attachés designated for thechangeovers and no new courses were presented. The next<strong>Defence</strong> Attaché course is scheduled for May 2011 <strong>to</strong> prepare<strong>Defence</strong> Attachés designate <strong>to</strong> deploy in July and December2011.Despite the structural misalignment and insufficient budgetallocation for operational requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>Defence</strong> Attaché<strong>of</strong>fices, the subdivision has managed <strong>to</strong> reach the performanceoutputs that were within the direct control. Services andDivisions contributed <strong>to</strong> the development and maintenance <strong>of</strong>the Subdivision as part <strong>of</strong> their on going activities within thebroader context <strong>of</strong> defence diplomacy.
