The Chaplain GeneralDivision (Religious Services) focus was on a ministry thatfollowed a holistic religious approach <strong>to</strong> all DOD membersand their dependants including those on internal and externaldeployments.The Chaplain Service contributed immensely <strong>to</strong> SADC chaplains'development. As chair <strong>of</strong> the Spiritual and MoralSupport Workgroup <strong>of</strong> the Operations Sub-subcommittee(OSSC) <strong>of</strong> the Interstate <strong>Defence</strong> and Security Council(ISDSC), the Chaplain General attended the ISDSC inMapu<strong>to</strong>, Mozambique <strong>to</strong> present a report. He also chaired theSpiritual and Moral Support Work Group work session inLesotho. Assistance in writing religious policies was provided<strong>to</strong> Namibia and Lesotho and three SADC chaplainsobtained training. Support was provided during the researchmissions <strong>to</strong> the SANAE bases, Gough and Marion islands.Three chaplains participated in these voyages where eachchaplain was attached <strong>to</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the three destinations.Ten Chaplains were deployed externally in all DOD deploymentmissions and both Regular and Reserve chaplains weredeployed at the borders. The Chaplain General and some <strong>of</strong>his Senior Staff Officers were part <strong>of</strong> the team that conducteda goodwill visit <strong>to</strong> deployed areas and military hospitalsduring which Christmas related devotions were conducted.The Chaplain Service also played an important role duringthe 2010 FIFA World Cup event by <strong>of</strong>fering trauma counselingand participating in national, regional and local structures<strong>of</strong> this event. It also contributed <strong>to</strong> the Government MoralRegeneration Programme by running specific ethical programmesin all units. The Combating HIV and AIDS throughSpiritual and Ethical Conduct (CHATSEC) programmetrained approximately 4 507 MSDS candidates. Training wasalso extended <strong>to</strong> facilita<strong>to</strong>rs where 30 chaplains were trainedincluding two from Botswana and other government departmentswhere 15 members from the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> SocialDevelopment trained as facilita<strong>to</strong>rs. An interdepartmental tiewas also sustained between the DOD and the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong>Environmental Affairs.The Chaplain Service was invited <strong>to</strong> the internationalChaplains conference in Germany and the Chaplain Generalalso attended the Chief <strong>of</strong> Chaplains Conference in the CzechRepublic. A senior member <strong>of</strong> the Division was invited <strong>to</strong> aChaplains conference in Italy where he shared with them thesubject <strong>of</strong> reconciliation from the South African perspectiveand experience.
