The gendering of the 'Triple Helix'.Teresa Rees, Alison Parken, Cardiff University, UKInnovation in the knowledge economy, as described by Henry Etzkowitz and Loet Leydesdorff (1997) is understood as theinteraction of policy, funding, research and commercialisation activities by universities, government and business.This article combines a policy review of the relationship between the strategic economic plans of regional development bodiesand their gender priorities. It considers how the way that the knowledge economy is defined impacts on the gender beneficiariesof policy, and research or business funding; provides an overview of gender mainstreaming within European Commission policyeconomic development policies, and draws upon empirical findings from recent case studies within the EC funded Euroditeprogram of research on the knowledge dynamics of regional economies.It examines the sectors where women are contributing to knowledge economies, often unrecognised, and considers theirrepresentative and substantive participation in contributing to knowledge economy governance, research, and business.References:- Etzkowitz, H and Leydesdorff, L.A.
