appointment was not carried out. Gerard died, and<br />

at the urgent request of the Dean of York and some<br />

of his canons the king consented to advance him to<br />

the northern primacy. As soon as the news of his<br />

election to the see of York became known to Anselm,<br />

there was a recurrence of the old demand of subjection.<br />

Both parties were resolute in maintaining<br />

what they conceived to be their rights. Both tried to<br />

gain the support of the king. At one time a sort of<br />

compromise was suggested, viz., to make it pro Iidc<br />

rice, at all events, a personal matter, and to recognise<br />

the primacy of Anselm. One bishop after another<br />

was sent to confer with Thomas, but nothing could<br />

shake his determination. Submission to Canterbury<br />

he would not brook. The king's intervention was<br />

sought, and a letter was addressed by him to the<br />

pope requesting that some duly authorised person<br />

should be sent by the apostolic see to settle the<br />

dissension. Ulric, a cardinal, was selected for this<br />

office. In the meantime Anselm passed away, but<br />

even on his death-bed he addressed a letter to<br />

Thomas urging him in the most solemn manner to<br />

make submission to the primatial see. In the end<br />

the king required the Archbishop-elect of York to<br />

submit himself to Canterbury, only without prejudice<br />

to his successors or the Church. Thomas stubbornly<br />

resisted, to the great displeasure of the king, who<br />

threatened ruin to him and all connected with him if<br />

he persisted in his obstinate refusal. With great<br />

difficulty he was, at last, in a manner compelled to<br />

yield, and was consecrated by the Bishop of London.<br />

The episcopate of Thomas II. was not a long one,
