had so much to do with the revival of learning in<br />

England. Christopher Urswick was one. He had<br />

held two prebendal stalls in succession, Tockerington<br />

and Fridaythorpe, and subsequently became Dean of<br />

York and Archdeacon of Richmond. He befriended<br />

Erasmus on many occasions, and to him the latter<br />

dedicated his translation of Lucian's "Gallus'' in<br />

1503. Young, who became Dean of York in 15 14,<br />

was another. To him Erasmus inscribed a translation<br />

of Plutarch, " De tuenda valetudine."'<br />

Neither of the two j^rclates who succeeded Rotherham<br />

in the archie])iscopal chair of York can be identified<br />

with the great movement which had so much to do<br />

with the impending reformation of the Church of this<br />

country. Savage, who was translated to York from<br />

Rochester, has left no tradition behind him except<br />

that he was a mighty hunter. Bainbrigg, who followed<br />

him, had at one time been Dean of York. He<br />

afterwards became Bishop of Durham, from which<br />

see he was translated to York in 1508. His latter<br />

years were passed altogether at Rome, where he<br />

acted as an ambassador from the King of England.<br />

In 15 II he received a cardinal's hat from the warrior-<br />

Pope Julius H. In 15 14 he came to an untimely<br />

end by poison, the vengeful act, as it was said, of<br />

an Italian priest in his household who had been<br />

grievously offended by the Archbishops ungovernable<br />

temper. But there is another version of the story.<br />

The Bishop of Worcester, who was an Italian, was<br />

associated with Bainbrigg in the business he had to<br />

transact at Rome. The latter discovered some mal-
