them as to lead to their arrest, which took place in<br />

April, 1537. They were committed to the Tower.<br />

The position they had occupied led naturally to their<br />

every action being watched with a jealous eye, and<br />

there was much to cause suspicion. They had taken<br />

no part in promoting the peace of the country.<br />

They were aware that outbreaks were in preparation<br />

in Cleveland and elsewhere, but they reported nothing<br />

respecting them to the Government. It w^as known<br />

that Aske had interfered at Hull to prevent the<br />

execution of Hallam, and it was also known that<br />

Constable would render no assistance in<br />

suppressing<br />

Bigod's rash and ill-advised outburst. Moreover,<br />

and this was perhaps the most damning fact of all<br />

it was known that, during the first insurrection, Lord<br />

Darcy and Aske had possessed themselves of artillery<br />

belonging to the king, and that it was still in their<br />

hands.<br />

Sir John Buhner and his wife (who was a natural<br />

daughter of Stafford, Duke of Buckingham), who<br />

had been engaged in some plot in Cleveland, were<br />

also arrested and taken to London about the same<br />

time, as were also Sir Thomas Percy, Bigod, Thirsk,<br />

Abbot of Fountains, the Abbot of Jervaulx, and<br />

several others. They were tried on the i6th May, and<br />

condemned to die. Lord Darcy suffered on Tower<br />

Hill on 30th June, 1537. The two abbots and the<br />

other gentlemen just mentioned were hanged at<br />

Tyburn, and Lady Bulmer was burnt in Smithfield.<br />

In the month of July, Aske and Constable were sent<br />

into Yorkshire, and delivered into the hands of the<br />

Duke of Norfolk. Constable was hanged in chains
