by the death of Archbishop Hutton, w ho left a large<br />

landed estate behind him. " I neither praise nor<br />

envy an episcopal fortune," is Surtees' remark<br />

" Hutton, however, only succeeded in that which<br />

most of his contemporaries tried to effect : his son,<br />

Timothy Hutton, served the office of sheriff of Yorkshire<br />

in 1607 : and the family of Hutton, of Marske,<br />

have ever since ranked with the first gentry of the<br />

North Riding.'' 1<br />

Another Bishop of Durham succeeded to the primacy<br />

of York. Bishoii Toby Mathew was appointed<br />

in July, 1606. He was an able controversialist, and<br />

one of the most eloquent preachers of his day, and<br />

in private life was singularly beloved for his steady<br />

friendship, his great liberality, and his remarkably<br />

genial temperament—the "cheerful sharpness of wit,"<br />

as Sir John Harington expresses it, " that so sauced<br />

his words and behaviour." Both Fuller and Sir John<br />

have preserved several of his jests, for he was always<br />

Lepido ore et concinno.<br />

The record of one may be allowed here in connection<br />

with his elevation to York :— he said it was<br />

/or lack of grace, for, according to a homely northern<br />

proverb, York has the higher rack, but Durham the<br />

deeper manger.<br />

The discovery of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605<br />

excited the fears and inflamed the prejudices alike of<br />

the king, his council, and the people generally against<br />

the Roman Catholics.<br />
