their conventicles, which they went on doing with<br />

wonderful pertinacity, in spite of all prohibitions, pains,<br />

and penalties. The authorities utterly failed to<br />

suppress them. They flourished in spite of all their<br />

efforts, and abounded at that period in very many<br />

parts' of Yorkshire where, at the present day, there is<br />

scarcely a representative of the sect to be found.<br />

The adherents of the Society of Friends appear to<br />

have then belonged chiefly to the lower middle<br />

class. It was almost the only form of dissent known<br />

at that time in Yorkshire, with the exception of<br />

Presbyterianism.<br />

Archbishop Frewen's episcopate was not a long<br />

one. He died at Bishopthorpe on the 28th March,<br />

1664, and was buried in the Minster.<br />

His successor, Richard Sterne, was translated from<br />

Carlisle. He is memorable as having been chaplain<br />

to Archbishop Laud, and having attended him on<br />

the scaffold. He died i8th June, 1683.<br />

The next Archbishop's career was somewhat remarkable.<br />

When little more than a boy, John Dolben<br />

left Oxford, where he had a studentship at Christ<br />

Church, joined the ranks of the Royalist army, was<br />

present at the siege of York, and fought at Marston<br />

Moor, where he was dangerously wounded. He<br />

afterwards received Holy Orders, and by one of<br />

those strange chances, as we call<br />

them, which sometimes<br />

occur in life, his next entry within the walls of<br />

York, long years after, was in far different array and<br />

with far different surroundings. Strange memories<br />

must have been awakened in the Archbishop's mind,<br />

as he passed under the archway of Micklegate bar on
