Those who sympathised with their diocesan were<br />

diametrically opposed to such men, and with their<br />

own good will would have abandoned the use of the<br />

surplice itself, if such a contravention of the Act of<br />

Uniformity could have been openly tolerated. The<br />

publication of the Bull of Pope Pius was deeply<br />

resented by all the reforming party. They regarded<br />

it as a deliberate insult to their sovereign, and as<br />

loyal subjects were determined to make their separation<br />

from the Church of Rome as definite and complete<br />

as possible. In this they were upheld by all<br />

the bishops without exception, and by none more<br />

strongly than Grindal. AVe may unhesitatingly date<br />

the commencement of Yorkshire Puritanism from his<br />

episcopate.<br />

The publication of the Bull was speedily followed<br />

by the passing of a statute forbidding the recognition<br />

of any Bull or other instrument obtained from<br />

the Bishop of Rome, or any person claiming to act<br />

under his authority. Offenders against this enactment<br />

were to be deemed guilty of high treason, to<br />

suffer death as traitors, and to forfeit all their possessions<br />

to the queen.<br />

Other things at this time evoked strong antagonistic<br />

feelings on the part of the queen and her advisers<br />

against the adherents of the Church of Rome. One<br />

was the repugnance which they exhibited to compulsory<br />

attendance at the services laid down in the book<br />

of Common Prayer. The other was the establishment<br />

of a college at Douay by William Allen, afterwards<br />

Cardinal, for the reception of English students<br />

to be trained for the priesthood, with a special view
