These articles were affixed to the doors of the<br />

churches in York and its neighbourhood, doubtless<br />

with the Archbishop's cognizance, if not with his<br />

absolute sanction. On learning this Henry advanced<br />

to the north, calling his forces together to Pontefract.<br />

The Earl of Westmorland, with the King's forces, met<br />

the insurgents on Shipton moor, and proposed a<br />

conference, at which, at the request of the archbishop,<br />

Westmorland undertook to lay their demands before<br />

the King. The rebel forces were misled by the<br />

apparently friendly demeanour of the leaders on either<br />

side, and they dispersed, leaving the Archbishop and<br />

the Earl Marshal defenceless. They were arrested<br />

and brought before the king and ordered to follow<br />

him to the Archbishop's own house at Bishopthorpe.<br />

A court was ordered to be held in the great hall, and<br />

Gascoigne, the chief justice, was commanded by the<br />

King to condemn the Archbishop to death. The<br />

judge utterly refused, alleging the reverence due to<br />

his episcopal character. Henry was furious, and<br />

called upon Sir William Fulthorpe (who was not a<br />

judge) to pronounce sentence of death upon the<br />

prelate, who was made to stand bare-headed before<br />

him to receive condemnation as a traitor. The Archbishop<br />

called God to witness that he was guiltless of<br />

any ill-design against the king ; that his sole object,<br />

in conjunction with others of the nobility, was to seek<br />

from him the reformation of many existing evils, and<br />

the redress of sundry grievances. But his protestations<br />

were unheeded, and he was condemned to die. All<br />

this took place early in tlie day. At noon-tide, on<br />

the 8th of June, he was brought out, made to mount,
