baner is displayed, cause all the monkes and chanons,<br />

that be in any wise faultie, to be tyed uppe, without<br />

further delaye or ceremony, to the terrible exemple of<br />

others." ^ His directions were carried out. Trafford,<br />

the Abbot of Sawley, was hanged at Lancaster on the<br />

loth March, 1536-7. The Prior of Hexham suffered<br />

likewise. Seventy-four individuals, clerical and lay,<br />

suffered in Cumberland and Westmoreland. Hallam<br />

and others were executed at Hull. Sir Francis Bigod<br />

and Sir George Lumley, with others, were sent to be<br />

tried in London.<br />

It is needless to say that the Pilgrimage of Grace<br />

was a movement the progress of which was watched<br />

with intense anxiety at Rome. Its commencement<br />

synchronised with Reginald Pole's appointment as<br />

cardinal. He subsequently had a legate's commission<br />

given him by the pope, and it was left to his own discretion<br />

whether to go to England or to give such<br />

counsel and help as he could to the insurgent leaders<br />

from the safer position of a foreign shore.<br />

Pole maintained correspondence with England.<br />

Whether Aske and his fellow-leaders in the insurrection<br />

were amongst those from whom he received<br />

despatches appears uncertain, but we find that<br />

suspicion, of one kind or another, so far rested upon<br />
