VESTMENT CONTROVERSY.<br />

Aiignstanuni, gave great offence to a large number of<br />

foreign Protestants, who left their homes in consequence<br />

and came over to England, where they<br />

appear to have met with a kindly reception by<br />

Cranmer, and other eminent persons of the New-<br />

Learning. Those of the greatest note amongst these<br />

refugees were John i Lasco, Bucer, and Peter Martyr.<br />

John a Lasco was allowed to minister in London to<br />

the foreigners ; Bucer was appointed divinity professor<br />

at Cambridge ; and Peter Martyr to the same<br />

chair at Oxford, where the latter carried on disputations<br />

on the subject of the doctrine of the Holy<br />

Eucharist, strongly condemning the teaching that<br />

grace was conferred by the Sacraments. It was a<br />

mode of expression, however, which Bucer, who<br />

took higher views respecting the Eucharist, did not<br />

scruple to use.<br />

\\\ 1550 a controversy arose respecting vestments,<br />

owing to the pertinacity of Hooper, who after the<br />

passing of the Six Articles Act, had retired to Zurich,<br />

where, under the teaching of Bullinger, he imbibed<br />

the Swiss theology in all its fulness, and advocated its<br />

principles with unflinching zeal and energy. He was<br />

appointed to the bishopric of Gloucester, but demurred<br />

to the episcopal garments. Pressure was<br />

brought upon Cranmer to dispense with the dress and<br />

to consecrate him, but this the primate refused. A<br />

compromise, however, finally took place and he<br />

received consecration.<br />

Another question was mooted about altars, in<br />

which Hooper took an active jiart, in conjunction<br />

with Ridley, who had lately been appointed Bishop
