Ascension, the coming of the Spirit of promise, and
the teaching of the Holy Apostles. And a thrill of
awe went through his hearers when he described the
da)' of doom, the horrors of the outer darkness, and
the brightness and glory of the hea\-enly City.
A metrical paraphrase, under the name of C^dmon,
is extant. But it is not wholly his composition, though
portions of it may be accepted as his genuine work.
The precise date of Ca;dmon's death is not given by
Bede, but he gives a singularly beautiful account of
the simple and tranquil end of the poet-monk of
Whitby.
