the great parish of Ripon were, however, brought<br />

before James' notice, and the result was that on the<br />

2nd August, 1604, his majesty constituted the latelydissolved<br />

college of secular canons a collegiate church,<br />

to consist of a dean and six prebendaries, with a grant<br />

for their maintenance of a considerable portion of the<br />

possessions of the old foundation.<br />

In the same year (1604) the Book of Canons was<br />

passed by both Houses of Convocation, and ratified<br />

by the king. This was the v.-ork of Bancroft, who<br />

was then Bishop of London. It is a condensation of<br />

various articles, injunctions, and synodical acts promulgated<br />

in the reigns of Edward VI. and Elizabeth.<br />

The Book of Canons was made binding upon York,<br />

although the Northern Convocation had not been<br />

consulted. This gave considerable umbrage to the<br />

clergy of the northern province, and they preferred a<br />

claim to make canons for themselves. This having<br />

been conceded, they at once adopted the canons as<br />

passed by the Southern Convocation.<br />

The most obnoxious part of the book to the Puritan<br />

party was the stringent requirement of subscription,<br />

ex 07111110, to the three articles contained in the Thirtysixth<br />

Canon. Refusal was punished by deprivation<br />

xinder the provisions of the statute of i Elizabeth.<br />

Many ministers went into voluntary exile, and others<br />

became avowed Nonconformists.<br />

Shortly after the passing of the Book of Canons,<br />

Bancroft was translated to Canterbur}- in succession<br />

to Whitgift, who had died on the 29th February,<br />

1603-4.<br />

On the 1 6th J^muary, 1605, York became vacant
