Thoresby prosecuted this work with unusual diligence,<br />

and contributed himself very largely to it, exerting<br />

himself also to obtain substantial assistance from<br />

others.<br />

Professor Willis comes to the conclusion that<br />

the presbytery, or easternmost part of the existing<br />

choir, and the lady-chapel beyond, were finished and<br />

roofed during the Archbishop's life, previously therefore<br />

to 1373, and twelve years after the foundation<br />

stone was laid. He translated the bodies of his<br />

predecesssors into his new building, and prepared<br />

his own tomb therein. The part of the building<br />

between the presbytery and the great tower was<br />

not commenced until after Thorcsby's death, and<br />

was probably finished about 1400.
