any record of his interment in the Hemsworth parish<br />

register.<br />

The charitable foundations in Yorkshire associated<br />

with his name were not altogether the outcome of<br />

posthumous liberality. He obtained letters patent<br />

from Henry VIH. for the foundation of three<br />

grammar-schools in the year 1546, at York, Old<br />

Malton, and Hemsworth. Each school was to be<br />

a separate corporation, with statutes and ordinances<br />

to be framed by the archbishop. Lands of the<br />

annual value of ^24 were given to the schoolmaster<br />

of Hemsworth. These schools are still in existence,<br />

under a revised system of government adapted to<br />

the requirements of the present day, and are doing<br />

good and useful work. Hemsworth hospital was<br />

founded under the provisions of his will, in which he<br />

laid down minute provisions for its regulation. The<br />

property bequeathed for its maintenance has much<br />

increased in value. It accommodates ten brethren<br />

and ten sisters, who have each a house and ^^40<br />

a year. The management of the charity is now<br />

vested in trustees, under a scheme drawn up by the<br />

Court of Chancery in 1857.<br />

The vacancy caused by Archbishop Holgate's deprivation<br />

was speedily filled by the appointment of<br />

Nicholas Heath. He had been successively Bishop<br />

of Llandaff, Rochester, and Worcester. Of the latter<br />

see he was deprived by Edward VI. for refusing to<br />

take the oath of supremacy, but was restored by<br />

Mary. The bull of Pope Paul IV. confirming his<br />

election to the see of York bears date the 21st June,<br />

1555, and is the last instrument. of the kind relating
