The prelate who succeeded Zouche claims more<br />

than a few passing words, for he was one of the most<br />

eminent of those who have occupied the chair of<br />

Paulinus, in learning, in munificence, and, above all,<br />

in his earnest zeal for the spiritual well-being of all<br />

who were under his pastoral charge. John de Thoresby<br />

was a Yorkshireman, and a scion of an honourable<br />

house. After filling many high positions, he was<br />

advanced successively to the sees of St. David's and<br />

Worcester. On the death of Zouche he became Archbishop<br />

of York, in 1352. With a rare disinterestedness<br />

he divested himself as soon as it was practicable<br />

of all secular employments that he might devote<br />

himself with singleness of aim to the spiritual work of<br />

his great diocese. His first efforts seem to have been<br />

directed to bringing to a final close the controversy<br />

which had for centuries embittered the mutual relations<br />

between York and Canterbury. Through the<br />

king's inter\'ention the two Archbishops met at Westminster,<br />

and it was arranged that each Archbishop<br />

should bear his cross erect in the province of the<br />

other. At parliaments and councils the Arclibishop<br />

of Canterbury was to sit on the king's right hand<br />

with his cross erect, the Archbishop of York on the<br />

left. In the open street their cross-bearers were to<br />

walk abreast ; in a narrow alley or a gateway he of<br />

Canterbury was to take precedence. The pope confirmed<br />

the arrangement, and assigned a distinction<br />

which still survives ; the successor of Augustine<br />

being thenceforth to be designated Primate of All
