Some of the saints are briefly described, e.g. Paulus<br />

as primus heremita, confessor, non poiitifex;<br />

Babillaas<br />

Episcopus ; Everildis as virgo, non viarlyr; Pelagia as<br />

viatroia ; Austreberta as virgo, non martyr ; and<br />

Germanus as Bishop of Capua and confessor. The<br />

translation of St. John of Beverley is celebrated on<br />

viii. Kal. Nov. In December, the name of St. Barbara<br />

appears, but the note is appended, no)i in nsu Ebor.<br />

The calendar specifies after the name of each saint<br />

the rank assigned to the festival and the number of<br />

lections appropriate to it, v>hether three or nine.<br />

The Portiforium appears to have been frequently<br />

used by devout laymen. Bequests not unseldom<br />

occur in mediaeval wills of the " Portous," or " Portiforium,"<br />

which the testator had used for saying his<br />

matins or evensong.<br />

Richard, Lord Scrope, who died<br />

in 1403, leaves to his son Roger the book, quo usus<br />

fui ad dicendum matiiti7ias meas et vesperas.^<br />

"The Pontifical of any church," says Maskell,- "is<br />

amongst the scarcest of its books existing; and this<br />

is no less true of those abroad than at home." This<br />

is easily accounted for.<br />

It was not a book belonging<br />

to the church, but was the private property of the<br />

bishop. Neither was it ever printed. No edition<br />

exists except those which, from time to time, have<br />

been published of the forms authorised by the Church<br />

of Rome. Only two pontificals belonging to the<br />

diocese of York are known to be in existence ; one<br />
