Peter van Paris. Joan Bocher's execution was<br />

pressed on Edward by Cranmer, who quoted from the<br />

law of Moses that blasphemers should be stoned,<br />

and that Joan had rushed with violence against the<br />

Apostles' Creed, and deserved the punishment of a<br />

blasphemer.<br />

It has indeed been alleged in extenuation<br />

that these people were Anabaptists, who certainly<br />

held opinions subversive of civil government, but<br />

there can scarcely be any doubt that they really<br />

suffered on account of holding erroneous theological<br />

views. If Mary's victims had been counted by units<br />

only, her persecution would have left little or no impression,<br />

probably, on the public mind, but the<br />

numbers were so appalling that the impression<br />

remains even yet ineffaceable.<br />

The line taken by Archbishop Holgate, as indicated<br />

above, was certain to place him in an obnoxious attitude,<br />

as regarded the new sovereign. He was, moreover,<br />

a married ecclesiastic, and one of the first acts<br />

of Mary's reign was to deprive the married clergy of<br />

their preferments.<br />

Holgate was accordingly deprived<br />

of his archbishopric, and in addition to that was<br />

committed to the Tower, chiefly because of his<br />

opposition to the queen's title to the Crown. He<br />

remained a prisoner for a year and a half, when he<br />

was released, it is said, on the intercession of Philip.<br />

He retired to Hemsworth, in Yorkshire, where he is<br />

supposed to have been born, and where he probably<br />

died in the year 1556, v.hich is the date of the probate<br />

of his will. But no sepulchral memorial exists<br />

to mark the place where his body lies, nor is there
