Durham, but still refused to sanction his journey to<br />

Rome.<br />

In the meantime the chapter of York had written<br />

to the pope announcing Thurstan's election, and<br />

urging that his consecration should not be delayed.<br />

The pope recognised the choice of the chapter and<br />

directed the Archbishop of Canterbury to consecrate<br />

at once, without requiring the profession. The pope's<br />

missive was unregarded. The Archbishop of Canterbury<br />

persisted in his requirements, and Thurstan was<br />

equally determined not to yield. For five years the<br />

dispute went on. The king had been induced to<br />

support the views of Canterbury, and although three<br />

successive popes—Paschal, Gelasius, and Calixtus<br />

all supported Thurstan's views, the matter still remained<br />

unsettled. It came to an end in 11 19. In<br />

that year a council was held at Rheims, over which<br />

Calixtus presided. Thurstan was permitted by Henry<br />

to attend it, under the idea that there was no likelihood<br />

of his receiving consecration from the pope.<br />

But he was mistaken. The pope embraced the<br />

opportunity and consecrated him with his own hands.<br />

Henry's indignation was extreme, but a conference<br />

took place between him and the pope with the view,<br />

if possible, of getting things arranged. A compromise<br />

was proposed. Profession of obedience to the<br />

prelate who now sat in the chair of Canterbury was<br />

to be imperative, though it was not of necessity to be<br />

required in the case of his successors. But all overtures<br />

were fruitless, and on Henry's return to England<br />

he dispossessed Thurstan of the property attaching
