Here lie took up his abode, and was making arrangements<br />

for his enthronization in the minster, when he<br />

was arrested by the Earl of Northumberland on a<br />

charge of high treason, and left Cawood on that melancholy<br />

journey which was ended by the death of the<br />

great cardinal at Leicester Abbey on the 29th Nov.,<br />

1530. He was succeeded at York by Edward Lee, the<br />

king's almoner, a canon of York and Chancellor of<br />

Salisbury, who was consecrated on the loth Dec, 1531.<br />

He had been sent the year before to Bologna along<br />

Wolsey's condemnation had some far-reaching<br />

consequences. With that strange adherence to<br />

technicalities which so often besets the legal mind, it<br />

Wolsey's authority. A general pardon was issued,<br />

but, either by design or oversight, it did not include<br />

the clergy. Early in 1531 they were summoned to<br />

appear in convocation. They were pardoned, it is<br />

true, but at a prodigious cost. The Province of<br />

Canterbury was required to pay 00,000, and that<br />

of York 8,840. They were required also to<br />

acknowledge the king to be " sole protector and<br />

supreme head of the Church." Great reluctance was<br />

exhibited to an acquiescence in the latter demand,<br />

and after a prolonged debate in the southern convocation,<br />

it was only at last accepted on the understanding<br />

that the words quantum per Cliristi legem<br />
