Statute known as Elizabeth's "Act of Uniformity,"<br />

which enjoined the attendance of all persons who had<br />

no lawful excuse or hindrance, at their parish church<br />

or chapel, and penalties were imposed upon those<br />

who wilfully absented themselves. Under the provisions<br />

of this act the book was to come into general<br />

use on St. John Baptist's day next following. It was<br />

at once ordered by the queen to be read in her<br />

own private chapel, which was done on Sunday, the<br />

1 2th May, and three days afterwards it was used at<br />

St. Paul's l)efore "a very august assembly of the<br />

Court."<br />

Tliere wa', very little opposition. Only 189 out of<br />

the whole body of the clergy refused compliance, and<br />

resigned their livings.<br />

Shortly aftenvards, the queen appointed Matthew<br />

Parker Arclibishop of Canterbury, and he was consecrated<br />

at Lambeth on the 17th December, in the<br />

same year. Early in the following year (1560),<br />

Thomas Young was translated from St. David's to<br />

the see of York, on the recommendation of Parker.<br />

He was one of those who went into exile in Mary's<br />

reign, taking refuge in Wesel, in company with<br />

Scory and about a hundred others, "all contented,<br />

seemingly, with King Edward s liturgy, for they never<br />

used any other."'<br />

Parker, apparently, was "satisfied<br />

of his ability, prudence, and resolution. The Court<br />

manifested an equal confidence, by appointing him<br />

President of the North.<br />
