He passed over the former great estuary into the<br />

district of Lindisse, or Lindsey, in Lincolnshire. " He<br />

preached in the old Roman hill tov.n of Lincoln, and<br />

its reeve, or 'prefect,' as Bede calls him, 'Bloecca'<br />

by name, became a convert, and began to build 'a<br />

stone church of noble workmanship,' the roofless<br />

walls of which were standing in Bede's own day."<br />

In Lincoln, moreover, he officiated on a very important<br />

occasion.<br />

Justus, the Archbishop of Canterbury,<br />

had passed away, and Honorius was elected to<br />

succeed him. Romanus, Bishop of Rochester, had<br />

perished at sea, whilst on a voyage to Rome, and<br />

Honorius sought consecration from Paulinus as the<br />

only representative in England of the episcopal order.<br />

Thus "the fifth archbishop of Canterbury was consecrated<br />

by the sole ministry of the first of a new line<br />

of bishops of Ycrk."i<br />

Paulinus baptised multitudes<br />

in Nottinghamshire also, in the waters of the Trent,<br />

near a place " which is usually identified with Southwell,<br />

where the minster of St. Mary, for ages connected<br />

with the see of York, has always claimed<br />

Paulinus as its founder."- Through Edwin's influence,<br />

Christianity was also extended to East Anglia. Bede<br />

tells us that his persuasions wrought upon Eorpwald,<br />

—whose father, Redwald, had given shelter and protection<br />

to Edwin in his day of need,—to embrace<br />

the faith of Christ.<br />
