their refusal was followed by deprivation. Some few<br />

suffered a short imprisonment, but Bonner was the<br />

only one treated with actual severity. He was condemned<br />

to perpetual confinement, which, according<br />

to Heylin, was done more for his own personal safety<br />

than in the way of punishment, the popular feeling<br />

against him being so strong that his life would have<br />

been in danger, had he appeared in public.<br />

Archbishop Heath now ceased to preside over the<br />

see of York, and went into an honourable retirement<br />

at Cobham in Surrey, where he had a small estate.<br />

But he was always treated with the utmost respect by<br />

Elizabeth, who visited him at Cobham on more than<br />

one occasion.<br />

The statute establishing the royal supremacy paved<br />
