in each for a resident preaching minister.^ It was a<br />

far-sighted and admirable scheme, projected though<br />

it were by men who had httle affection for the Church<br />

of England, in our sense of the term, and was a remarkable<br />

foreshadowing of a plan which has been<br />

carried out in our own day, notably in Leeds, and in<br />

other wide and extensive parishes in different parts of<br />

England.<br />

In 1660 the restoration of Charles II. to the throne<br />

of Great Britain took place, and was followed by the<br />

restoration of the Church of England to her rights<br />

and privileges. The bishops were reinstated in their<br />

sees, and those which had become vacant by the<br />

deaths of their occupants were filled up without delay.<br />

Archbishop Williams, as has already been mentioned,<br />

died in 1650. The Northern primacy was bestowed<br />

by the king upon Accepted Frewen, Bishop of<br />

Coventry and Lichfield. He was elected Archbishop<br />

of York on the 22nd September, 1660, and enthroned<br />

on the nth of the following month.<br />

The Presbyterian party were much discontented at<br />

the prospect of the Book of Common-prayer being<br />

again recognised as the form which was to guide the<br />

public worship of the people of England, and made<br />

many complaints to the king upon the subject. They<br />

alleged the burden that a set form of prayer imposed<br />

upon tender consciences, and though they admitted<br />

that a Liturgy, if consonant to the Word of God,<br />

might lawfully be used, it ought not to be enforced<br />

with over much rigour, but that the minister might<br />
