Photosynthesis in green leaves uses solar energy in wavelengths from 0.4 to 0.7<br />

µm, <strong>of</strong>ten referred to as photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) or simply light.<br />

The ratio <strong>of</strong> PAR to total solar radiation is close to 0.50 in both the tropics and the<br />

temperate regions (Monteith 1972), and represents a weighted mean between the<br />

fractions for direct radiation and diffuse sky radiation.
