Marie McAuliffe is the newly appointed head of the Migration Policy<br />

<strong>Research</strong> Division in IOM Geneva. Marie has published in peer-reviewed migration<br />

journals <strong>and</strong> for policy organizations on migrant smuggling, asylum seekers <strong>and</strong><br />

refugees, <strong>and</strong> protection in South-East Asia. She is currently editing a book on<br />

irregular migration (with Khalid Koser) due to be published in 2017 by ANU Press.<br />

Marie is also a doctoral c<strong>and</strong>idate at the Australian National University, <strong>and</strong> is on<br />

leave from the Australian Department of Immigration <strong>and</strong> Border Protection. *<br />

She is a visiting fellow at the Global Migration Centre at the Graduate Institute of<br />

International <strong>and</strong> Development Studies in Geneva, <strong>and</strong> a visiting scholar at the<br />

Population Institute at Hacettepe University in Ankara. Marie has led migration<br />

research <strong>and</strong> policy teams in government <strong>and</strong> has consulted to the IOM, the ILO,<br />

as well as in the private sector, including while based in the Republic of Korea,<br />

the Russian Federation <strong>and</strong> Turkey. For three years (2012–2014), Marie directed<br />

the Australian irregular migration research programme.<br />

Nassim Majidi is the founder <strong>and</strong> co-director of Samuel Hall, a think<br />

tank specializing in field-based research, with offices in Kabul, Nairobi <strong>and</strong><br />

Mogadishu. Nassim is an associate researcher at Sciences Po’s Centre for<br />

International Studies <strong>and</strong> <strong>Research</strong>, <strong>and</strong> has published over 20 articles on<br />

migration issues covering Afghanistan, the East <strong>and</strong> Horn of Africa. She teaches<br />

a master’s course on refugees <strong>and</strong> migration as part of Sciences Po Lille’s Conflict<br />

<strong>and</strong> Development programme. Her cross-cutting skills have led her to interview<br />

refugees, migrants <strong>and</strong> returnees in the world’s border areas, origin, transit <strong>and</strong><br />

destination countries. Based on her knowledge of migration actors, she has<br />

developed programmes, policies <strong>and</strong> monitoring reviews that have had a lasting<br />

impact. Nassim was nominated in 2015 by the Norwegian Refugee Council for the<br />

Nansen Refugee Award. Nassim has a PhD <strong>and</strong> a master’s degree in International<br />

Relations (Sciences Po Paris), <strong>and</strong> a BA in Government (Cornell University).<br />

Arezo Malakooti is a social researcher with a developed expertise on<br />

migration-related research. At the time of writing, Arezo was the director of<br />

Migration <strong>Research</strong> at Altai Consulting. She is the primary author of a number<br />

of studies on migration to <strong>and</strong> through North Africa, which has involved periods<br />

of time spent in the region conducting interviews with migrants on the ground.<br />

This includes Irregular Migration from West Africa to North Africa <strong>and</strong> Europe<br />

(Altai for IOM Nigeria, 2015); Migration Trends in the Mediterranean: Connecting<br />

the Dots (Altai for IOM MENA, 2015); Mixed Migration: Libya at the Crossroads.<br />
