RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT THROUGH THE YEARS My vacation at the end of the summer and when the replacement Corporal arrived, was a relaxing drive to Regina to see Mum and Dad in their new home…an apartment. Sometime after that, since my Dad’s surveying business was not ‘making it’, he took a job with a large surveying firm in Edmonton, so off they went, and lived in a rented apartment close to downtown. Mum got herself a job with the Provincial Government, as a secretary. She’d had a similar job while in Regina. Both jobs to ‘make ends meet’. Mum and Dad – Regina - 1969 June 2017 101
RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT THROUGH THE YEARS 1970 Hope Detachment On March 1 st 1970, I was transferred to Hope, so terminating my one year of penance in Boston Bar. After a couple of months on shift work, I found myself back in a ‘court clerk’ role. The judge was another great fellow who often signed a bunch of blank arrest warrants and other legal documents so we wouldn’t have to travel up to Yale, where he lived, for a signature. Worked well. Detachment was in here To Vancouver I lived in here Hope, B.C. While I didn’t spend long doing ‘real police work’ at Hope, for the few months that I did, I managed to arrest the local mayor for impaired driving (didn’t know who he was!), pull ‘floaters’ out of the Fraser River at Yale, where they’d get caught in back eddies, and earn a question from our Chilliwack Sub-Division ‘readers’ (they were experienced members – usually Corporals who checked submitted reports on reportable incidents – and there were many – for completeness, legality, etc.) as to the meaning of a word (coitus) I used in my report of a rape that I had investigated. Seems I stumped them. Talking of fishing bodies out of the river…you had to be very careful since they had usually been in the river for a long period of time June 2017 102
