THROUGH THE YEARS
In September, I started my one-year program at Simon
Fraser University (SFU), a fairly new and nice campus
located on the top of Burnaby Mountain about an hour’s
drive from home in Abbotsford. I took a total of 9 courses
over the Fall and Spring
semesters. Not only
was I the oldest student
in all the classes, but
even the profs and
teaching assistants
were younger than me.
I found it stressful and
very difficult, with loads
of homework. But I
passed, just, and got
back to work at the end
of April 1982, taking an
additional two
correspondence
courses through 1983. A sucker for punishment.
This year we invested in a second-hand tent trailer, paid for with all the overtime money I had
made in the Surrey Burglary squad. After a couple of “practice” weekend campouts, we spent
the first two weeks of August at a campground (Walton’s Mountain Resort) beside the lake in
Osoyoos. At that time the
campground was in a peach
orchard, and was affordable
for us. Now, it’s a paved,
luxury motor-home spot for
the very rich, and called
Walton’s Lakeside Resort.
Pad rentals are in the
thousands of dollars. Mrs.
Walton used to run the place and the kids used to take their spending money and buy ‘junk’ in
the little campground store. We went there for the
