THROUGH THE YEARS
Since he was often
away from home with
his work, and we
didn’t have a
telephone, he would
send me a telegram
for occasions such as
my birthday, this one
on my 6 th birthday in
1954.
In the mid 1950’s Dad had reached the senior level
of his pay grade and there were no prospects for
advancement (according to a letter of reference that
was written for him), so he sought alternate
employment opportunities, still in the field of land
surveying, and applied for jobs in South Africa,
Australia, and Canada.
The Government of Saskatchewan responded to his
application, so off he went, by plane, in early 1957 to
establish himself in Canada, where we eventually
joined him in Regina in November of that year, and
from where he continued his land surveying with the
Dept. of Highways (and was no longer required to
wear a shirt and tie to work!).
