RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT THROUGH THE YEARS School was only 2 blocks away and when I arrived I was put into Grade 5 as the English education system was deemed to be further ahead than the Canadian system. Remember my C and C- in math?...even though we were doing fractions in England, but not here, I still had a hell of a time…which continued right through Grade 12 and beyond!! Close to the school was a corner store where I remember buying my first glazed donuts and strawberry licorice. Of the 4 schools that I attended in Regina, Davin is the only one still standing. The other 3, including my high school, were all demolished and replaced with housing. RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT THROUGH THE YEARS 1958 We took full advantage of the nice weather in the Spring and Summer to find our way around Regina, going to the Natural History Museum, RCMP to see the Musical Ride, and the Qu’Appelle Valley. I’ve always considered Regina to be a pretty little city, but then you have to come from Regina to like Regina. Almost everyone I grew up with now lives in B.C. somewhere. Regina pretty much emptied out after high school! Qu’Appelle Valley – July 1958 We moved in the summer of 1958 to a 2- bedroom house, with a 3 rd bedroom in the basement – mine. That year I went to Wetmore Public School for Grades 6 and 7, about a mile from home. I had a friend who delivered newspapers and for 25 cents I would often help him with his route. One day returning home from delivering, I had to pass by a group of bullies, with a dog. One of the bullies set his large dog on me and I was bitten on my ‘privates’. It was winter so I was wearing thick trousers, 2750 Edgar St. Regina – Aug, 1958 which happened to protect me somewhat. Anyhow, I limped home crying. Dad was home and ‘lost it’, going immediately to the dog-owner’s home and doing/saying I-don’t-know what. He also called the police and the dog had to be put down! June 2017 58
