THROUGH THE YEARS
Seems all the loggers had gathered and were letting loose. Not
good with kids. The next night was spent in Mattawa, where it
really was cold. From there on to Ottawa. We stayed at the
Camm’s since we couldn’t immediately take possession of our
Winchester house.
When the day
came for
possession
and noon
arrival of our
moving truck,
we drove to
Winchester
only to find
that the
elderly couple
whom we
bought from, hadn’t even started packing. What a nightmare that was, helping them pack, trying
to move them along. Nothing went right for us. Then our queen-size bed didn’t fit up the stairs,
so had to cut out a section of the ceiling.
Almost immediately upon starting work in
the CPIC Building in HQ, I was assigned
security duties for the Papal Visit of John
Paul II. My uniforms weren’t even
unpacked, so had to really scramble to try
and find most of my kit. Never could find
the rank badges for my shirt collars…had
to get new ones. That duty was
awful…standing on Wellington Avenue in
front of the Parliament Buildings for about
CPIC Building within HQ complex - Ottawa
12 hours. We were relieved once to get a crappy
sandwich at the back of the Parliament Buildings. All of that just to see him scoot by for a
couple of seconds in the Popemobile. Not impressed. Another great welcome to Ottawa. For
the next 5 years I was to find out, the hard
way, that I was one of the few ‘fit for duty’
members thus available to attend all
demonstrations on the hill where
manpower was required, to sit around in
buses all day, get a ‘box lunch’, and never
see action. Many, many other members
had long-ago seen the light and had
themselves declared ‘medically unfit’ for
these types of duties. I was not impressed
and remain thus to this day when it comes
