RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT THROUGH THE YEARS This summer we went to see Tim, who had just completed his 2 nd year, participate in the graduation parade. A massive and impressive display of redcoats. Sharon and I decided to visit Phil and Jean in Rhode Island once again, so off we went for our 22 nd anniversary. On the boardwalk at one the beautiful beaches one day, as we were leaving, I remember getting a bug bite on my foot. That evening I was not feeling good at all, and by the morning was in pretty bad shape. So much so, that Sharon had to put me in the car and drive me straight back to Ottawa. I slept most of the way. She took me straight to the hospital where I was immediately admitted and ended up staying for about a week. Not certain, but we think it was Lyme disease. My foot swelled to the point that the skin split…gross. Being an Officer I got my own private room! I was off work for a couple of weeks, and during my “recovery” took up a hobby that had been dormant since I was in school….painting. So began what has become my hobby, now in its 22 nd . year. RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT THROUGH THE YEARS With good eye glasses and a penchant for ‘little things’, I started painting (with enamel) miniature landscapes, seascapes, country scenes and cottages, most with an English flavour, on wooden plaques. Called my ‘business’ “Light from the Past”. Sharon sold quite a number of the paintings before I smartened up and started scanning them before selling them. Missed an awful lot, though. From my now hundreds of paintings, I create blank greeting and note cards, ideal for any occasion. Chris went out to Winnipeg to see all his buddies, and came home with 2 earrings and blond hair. Where did we go wrong? I think he was working at Pizza Hut by this time, where his nickname was “The Dancing Dish Pig”…nice. This year, the Informatics Directorate annual conference was held in Whitehorse, Yukon. A great opportunity to see that part of the country. One of our arranged ‘tours’ was boarding a motor coach at the White Pass Depot in Whitehorse for a trip along the scenic South Klondike Highway to Fraser, BC, where we connected with the world famous narrow gauge White Pass & Yukon Route Railway built in 1895 for the Klondike Gold Rush. It’s a 28-mile rail excursion down over the White Pass Summit and into Skagway, Alaska, where we were able to spend the afternoon. Quite the neat, tiny tourist town, where the gold rush began.
