RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT THROUGH THE YEARS 1990 ”D” Div. HQ, Officer In Charge, Informatics Branch It was New Years Eve that Sharon and I started our house-hunting trip to Winnipeg. Neither of us knew the city, so spent the cold, dark evening driving up and down streets in what looked like reasonable parts of the city…trying to look in people’s windows and check out houses…and it was bloody cold. Our ‘duty agent’ real estate fellow certainly earned his money on that trip. We must have looked at 50 houses that week. Not a good time of the year to either sell or buy. We ended up buying this 4-bedroom, 2½bath house, with a finished basement at 29 Tunis Bay, in the south end of the city. Of course it cost us more than what we sold for in Winchester. The 2-car garage was a blessing in winter. We finally arrived in Winnipeg in the dead of winter, and absolutely froze as the movers removed the front door to get everything in. The couch cushions were so frozen solid that we could not sit on them for days. It was so cold across northern Ontario that the I-bar on the moving truck cracked. We’re lucky we didn’t lose the load. Started painting the whole house inside immediately after we moved in. Remember painting at night while the family was trying to watch TV in the living room…I was painting around them. Notice those big tire tracks in the photo? Well, Winnipeg used to send a huge bucket to clear the end of peoples’ driveways. What a wonderful thing. I’ve never seen that level of service anywhere else. June 2017 168
