Ernest Stanley Lowen, my maternal
grandfather, was born in 1896. We can
trace his lineage to the 1796 birth of his
great-grandfather, James, in Cheshunt,
Hertfordshire. Grandpa Lowen served in
the artillery in World War I, followed by a
career in the Post Office as a mail sorter
on the London to Scotland overnight trains.
Marion Alice Lowen, my maternal
grandmother, was also born in 1896. We
can trace her lineage to the 1848 birth of
her great-grandfather, John White, in
Scotland. Her father’s brother, John Albert
(Uncle Jack), whom I met a couple of times
while growing up in England, was born in
1871, went to sea on sailing ships at the
age of 15, and lived to be 100 years old.
Ernest and Marion were married in June
17 th 1919, so I guess that means my
mother was at that wedding!
