RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT THROUGH THE YEARS Being a year older than me, Bill Daniels got his driver’s licence in 1964 at the age of 16, and being from a well-off family, was lucky to be able to drive one of their two family vehicles. The one we used to regularly go ‘cruising’ in was a 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark III (pictured here) with a push-button transmission. It had electric windows all around, including the rear window. Poor Bill was quite short, so looked pretty small in the driver’s seat of this behemoth. Although Dad at that time had a standard, column-shift,1961 Ford Fairlane, I didn’t have my driver’s licence, and he needed the car, as by this time he was no longer with the government, but self-employed. I did manage to get my driver’s licence just before graduation the following year (1965). June 2017 79
RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT THROUGH THE YEARS 1965 This was to be my ‘coming of age’ year. I was 17 years old, in my final year of high school, not doing well academically, but very much loving the band scene. For a reason I cannot fathom, I, partook of school activities such as being the ‘business manager’ for the school telephone directory. What was I thinking? I did, however, excel at art, and during this year painted a large, precise watercolor picture of the Legislative Buildings which was displayed in the school, and was painted from an angle similar to that in this photo. I also built a balsa wood scale model of Shakespeare’s 1599 Globe Theatre, a replica of which currently sits beside the River Thames in London, England. For this project, I got at least an “A” in art, and the model was put on display at all the high schools in Regina. It was hard to build, very delicate, and I never saw it again. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre I’m sure art was my saving grace as I believe I was lucky to graduate from Grade 12…with a D minus average, after writing the horrid provincial exams. Poor Bill Daniels didn’t make it through Grade 11, and had to repeat his year. I dodged the bullet. As a reward for graduating, or perhaps as a way to keep me out the band and from following the ‘wrong path’ in life, my graduation ‘gift’ was a 3-week, all-expenses paid trip to England. I had never had a part-time job, or otherwise worked (other than the band), and consequently had no June 2017 80
