Hope Detachment
On March 1 st
1970, I was
transferred to
Hope, so
terminating my
one year of
penance in
Boston Bar.
After a couple of
months on shift
work, I found
myself back in a
‘court clerk’ role.
The judge was
another great
fellow who often
signed a bunch
of blank arrest
warrants and
other legal
documents so
we wouldn’t
have to travel up
to Yale, where
he lived, for a
signature. Worked well.

While I didn’t spend long doing ‘real police work’ at
Hope, for the few months that I did, I managed to
arrest the local mayor for impaired driving (didn’t
know who he was!), pull ‘floaters’ out of the Fraser
River at Yale, where they’d get caught in back
eddies, and earn a question from our Chilliwack
Sub-Division ‘readers’ (they were experienced
members – usually Corporals who checked
submitted reports on reportable incidents – and
there were many – for completeness, legality, etc.)
as to the meaning of a word (coitus) I used in my
report of a rape that I had investigated. Seems I
stumped them. Talking of fishing bodies out of the
river…you had to be very careful since they had
usually been in the river for a long period of time
