There was a sweet shop
(candy store) not far from
the school where I
remember going with John
Ward and loading up on
“junk” with our meagre
supply of pennies.
One day (in 1956), for some
reason, John and I were
walking in this park along
Chase Side to Enfield town.
It was here where John and
I discovered a hoard of
farthings (1 farthing = onequarter
of a penny) in a
drain in the railway
embankment which you
can’t see but is on the right
of this photo.
We thought we’d died and
gone to heaven. The
sweet shop beckoned!
John kept a couple and
when I visited him in 2011
he gave me one (which I’ve
since unfortunately lost).
