THROUGH THE YEARS
While Sharon was attending to Timothy in Ottawa, I took a house-hunting trip out west and
found us a little place in Abbotsford (actually Matsqui)…at 33561 Holland Avenue. Couldn’t
afford Langley. Of course we didn’t have enough money for a down-payment so had to seek
some financial assistance from Sharon’s Dad…whom we eventually paid back after about 25
years! I bought this house, a 3-bedroom, 1-bath, which, with the help of a neighbour, we later
painted bright yellow. Had a couple of pear trees in the back garden, plus a hazelnut tree. It
was almost a double lot and cost us I think $37,500.00 (equivalent of $167,500 in 2017 dollars).
Had a dirt-floor basement, and mice in the walls.
The house, in fact the whole block, has since been demolished, with a strip mall now occupying
the site.

Since Tim was only a couple of months old, and had recently had surgery, I had to drive by
myself, with the trailer, to Abbotsford, after the movers had packed up our apartment. Sharon
and Tim moved into Sharon’s parents, and would fly out after I was settled in the house. I
stopped in Edmonton to pick up my mother who would briefly help us all get settled when
Sharon arrived, and before her mum came for an extended stay. Had my only ever flat tire on
that trip.
