THROUGH THE YEARS
In early June, we were bused to Penhold where part two training was completed. And who was
there to greet us but now-S/M Bill Pomfret, another of my Dad’s RCMP friends. Oh, oh, I said.
It was in Penhold that I felt the need to have a car, so off I went to the local Ford dealership,
slapped down a small deposit for a new Ford Fairlane, then, upon considering that I wouldn’t
have enough income to support payments, plus, potentially, living accommodation and food, I
returned to the dealership to cancel the deal…lost
my deposit! I’m sure they suckered many recruits.
On one weekend day, four of us drove to Banff for
the day. I was absolutely gob-smacked with the
mountains, never having seen anything like them
before. Love at first sight.
Before a recruit would leave training, he was able
to choose 2 or 3 Provinces where he would like to
be posted. You could not return to your home
Province, and had to be at least one Province away
from it. That ruled out Alberta for me. I chose B.C.,
never having been there, but now loving
mountains.
