THROUGH THE YEARS
Many years ago, there were contests between stationmasters
for the prettiest stations. They outdid each
other with flowers in planters, hanging baskets, etc. It
truly was pretty. Now they’ve degenerated into mere
functional facilities. Platforms used to have heated,
closed-in waiting rooms, too.
When we went into London on the train from Gordon Hill,
this is what it was like (in the 1950’s) as the train
approached the end of several lines at King’s Cross
station. Always busy. Smog and smoke were common,
and the train door handles were always sooty.
