RICHARD ALLEN SCOTT
THROUGH THE YEARS
1965
This was to be my
‘coming of age’ year.
I was 17 years old, in
my final year of high
school, not doing well
academically, but very
much loving the band
scene. For a reason I
cannot fathom, I,
partook of school
activities such as being
the ‘business manager’
for the school
telephone directory. What was I thinking?
I did, however, excel at art, and during this year painted
a large, precise watercolor picture of the Legislative
Buildings which was displayed in the school, and was
painted from an angle similar to that in this photo. I
also built a balsa wood scale model of Shakespeare’s
1599 Globe Theatre, a replica of which currently sits
beside the River Thames in London, England. For this
project, I got at least an “A” in art, and the model was
put on display at all the high schools in Regina. It was
hard to build, very delicate, and I never saw it again.

I’m sure art was my saving grace as I believe I was
lucky to graduate from Grade 12…with a D minus
average, after writing the horrid provincial exams.
Poor Bill Daniels didn’t make it through Grade 11, and had to repeat his year. I dodged the
bullet.
As a reward for graduating, or perhaps as a way to keep me out the band and from following the
‘wrong path’ in life, my graduation ‘gift’ was a 3-week, all-expenses paid trip to England. I had
never had a part-time job, or otherwise worked (other than the band), and consequently had no
