with <strong>the</strong> rules and commandments revealed by Allâhu ta’âlâ, are<br />

disbelievers.” And a disbeliever in turn cannot be <strong>the</strong> Prophet’s<br />

representative, i.e. <strong>the</strong> Khalîfa. By <strong>the</strong> same token, a person who<br />

did not join Usâma’s army must have become a disbeliever. None<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three Khalîfas joined <strong>the</strong> army. You say that everything<br />

Rasûlullah did was by wahy. The same rule applies to this instance.<br />

Rasûlullah ‘sall-Allâhu alaihi wa sallam’ had deported Merwan<br />

out <strong>of</strong> Medina. This, too, was by wahy. [Merwan bin Hakem bin<br />

Ebil ’âs bin Umayya was born in <strong>the</strong> second year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hijrat<br />

(Hegira). He was ’Uthmân’s ‘radiy-Allâhu anh’ paternal first<br />

cousin. He passed away in 65, during his caliphate]. The Khalîfa<br />

’Uthmân ‘radiy-Allâhu anh’ invited him back to Medina,<br />

employed him as a secretary in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> caliphate, thus prizing<br />

him; this is disbelief. And it is disbelief for two different reasons.<br />

The first reason is that which you have stated. The second reason<br />

is <strong>the</strong> twenty-second âyat <strong>of</strong> Mujâdala sûra, which purports,<br />

“People who have îmân (belief) in Allâhu ta’âlâ and on <strong>the</strong><br />

Judgement Day, would not love <strong>the</strong> enemies <strong>of</strong> Allâhu ta’âlâ and<br />

His Messenger, even though <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong>ir bro<strong>the</strong>rs, (sisters), or<br />

relatives.”<br />

With <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> Allâhu ta’âlâ, here is our answer to this<br />

booklet: Not everything Rasûlullah ‘sall-Allâhu alaihi wa sallam’<br />

said or did was by wahy. The author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> booklet erroneously<br />

introduces this âyat-i-kerîma as an evidence. For <strong>the</strong> âyat informs<br />

that Qur’ân al-kerîm is wahy. Beydâwî [Abdullah bin ’Umar;<br />

passed away in Tabriz in 691 (C.E. 1291)], <strong>the</strong> paramount guide <strong>of</strong><br />

Mufassirs (scholars dealing with <strong>the</strong> meanings <strong>of</strong> âyat-i-kerîmas),<br />

explains this âyat as follows: “Whatever he says <strong>of</strong> Qur’ân alkerîm<br />

is not <strong>of</strong> himself. It is by wahy.” If all his words and actions<br />

had been by wahy, Allâhu ta’âlâ would never have contradicted or<br />

reproved him. For instance, <strong>the</strong> first âyat <strong>of</strong> Tahrîm sûra purports,<br />

“O my Prophet ‘sall-Allâhu alaihi wa sallam’! Why are you<br />

prohibiting yourself from something which Allâhu ta’âlâ has<br />

made halâl for you?” The forty-fourth âyat <strong>of</strong> Tawba sûra<br />

purports, “Why did you give <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> permission? Allâhu ta’âlâ<br />

has forgiven you this deed <strong>of</strong> yours.” The sixty-seventh âyat <strong>of</strong><br />

Anfâl sûra purports, “It would not be worthy <strong>of</strong> any Prophet to<br />

set free in return for property <strong>the</strong> captives in war. Killing most <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m on <strong>the</strong> earth will cause <strong>the</strong>m to become weaker. You are<br />

after worldly property. Yet Allâhu ta’âlâ wishes you to earn<br />

thawâb and attain Paradise and (its) blessings.” Rasûlullah ‘sall-<br />
