The most important reason for utilizing milestones is that they allow the airport to develop facilities according to need generated by actual demand levels. The demand-based schedule provides flexibility in development, as development schedules can be slowed or expedited in response to actual demand at any given time over the planning period. The resulting plan provides airport officials with a financiallyresponsible, need-based program. The planning milestones of short, intermediate, and long-term generally correlate to the five, ten, and twentyyear periods used in the previous chapter. For based aircraft the following planning milestones apply: • Short Term - 255 • Intermediate Term - 280 • Long Term - 330 BASED AIRCRAFT FLEET MIX PROJECTION Knowing the aircraft fleet mix expected to utilize the airport is necessary to properly plan facilities that will best serve the level of activity and the type of activities occurring at the airport. The existing based aircraft fleet mix is comprised of 182 single-engine, 38 multi-engine, piston-powered aircraft, one jet-powered aircraft, and two helicopters. At the present time, there are no based turboprop fixed wing aircraft.
