radiography, including techniques, interpretation, quality assurance,<br />

DHYG 1319 Dental Materials (2-3-3) Physical <strong>and</strong> chemical<br />
properties of dental materials including the application <strong>and</strong><br />
manipulation of the various materials used in dentistry.<br />
DHYG 1331 Preclinical Dental Hygiene (1-7-3) Foundational<br />
knowledge for performing clinical skills on patients with emphasis<br />
on procedures <strong>and</strong> rationale for performing dental hygiene care.<br />
Introduction to ethical principles as they apply to dental hygiene<br />

DHYG 2153 Dental Hygiene Practice (1-0-1) Emphasis on the<br />
laws governing the practice of dentistry <strong>and</strong> dental hygiene, moral<br />

hygiene profession. Practice settings for the dental hygienist, office<br />

responsibilities of educational personnel with emphasis on<br />
development of professionalism <strong>and</strong> communication strategies.<br />
Topics include the various codes of ethics governing the<br />
educational field, the issue of confidentiality, learners' rights <strong>and</strong><br />
responsibilities, <strong>and</strong> challenges facing schools.<br />
EDTC 1307 Introduction to Teaching Reading (2-4-3) General<br />
principles of reading instruction. Topics include emergent literacy,<br />
reading readiness, reading instruction, literacy-based environments,<br />
<strong>and</strong> a review of varied materials <strong>and</strong> techniques for teaching<br />
reading.<br />
EDTC 1321 Bilingual Education (2-2-3) An overview of bilingual<br />
education. Topics include awareness of cultural diversity,<br />
assessment strategies, teaching techniques, instructional activity<br />
development, <strong>and</strong> historical/philosophical concepts of bilingual/<br />
bicultural education.<br />
EDTC 1325 Multicultural Education (2-2-3) An examination of<br />
cultural diversity found in society <strong>and</strong> reflected in the classroom.<br />
Topics include the study of major cultures <strong>and</strong> their influence<br />
on lifestyle, behavior, learning, intercultural communication <strong>and</strong><br />
teaching, as well as psychosocial stressors encountered by diverse<br />
cultural groups.<br />
EDTC 1341 Instructional Technology <strong>and</strong> Computer Applications<br />
(2-2-3) Examination of specialized educational technology. Topics<br />
include the integration of educational computer terminology,<br />
system operations, software, <strong>and</strong> multimedia in the contemporary<br />
classroom environment.<br />

EDTC 1373 Writing Problems (3-0-3) An in depth coverage of<br />
writing difficulties at the elementary level. Emphasis will be on the<br />

curriculum to be taught, instructional techniques to utilize with<br />
students, models of teaching students, assessment techniques, <strong>and</strong><br />
lesson planning strategies useful in working with the elementary<br />
student.<br />
EDTC 1374 Teaching Math & Science in the Elementary School (2-4-<br />
3) Practical approaches for introducing math <strong>and</strong> science concepts<br />
in an elementary classroom lab environment with an emphasis on<br />
problem solving, inquiry, <strong>and</strong> critical thinking. Topics include basic<br />
math <strong>and</strong> science concepts <strong>and</strong> properties, diagnostic testing,<br />
pedagogy, <strong>and</strong> recognizing <strong>and</strong> recommending corrective teaching<br />
strategies.<br />
EDTC 1375 Issues in Special Needs Education (3-0-3) An<br />
examination of current research, federal <strong>and</strong> state regulations, <strong>and</strong><br />
programs for students with exceptionalities within the public school<br />
environment. Topics address methods for supporting instructional<br />
planning <strong>and</strong> the implementation of program goals <strong>and</strong> objectives.<br />
EDTC 2305 Reading Problems (2-4-3) In-depth coverage of reading<br />
difficulties. Emphasis on the theories, strategies, recognition, <strong>and</strong><br />
remediation of reading problems. Topics include assessment, direct<br />
instruction, <strong>and</strong> motivational/interactive literacy activities.<br />
EDTC 2311 Instructional Practices <strong>and</strong> Effective Learning<br />
Environments (2-4-3) General principles for selecting<br />
developmentally appropriate strategies in core curriculum<br />
areas, planning the classroom environment, <strong>and</strong> instructional<br />
accommodations <strong>and</strong> modifications.<br />
EDTC 2317 Guiding <strong>Student</strong> Behavior (2-4-3) Developmentally<br />
appropriate <strong>and</strong> indirect guidance techniques for use in various<br />
school environments. Topics include identifying causes of<br />
inappropriate behavior, establishing <strong>and</strong> managing routines, the<br />
environment's role in promoting positive behavior, promoting selfesteem<br />
negotiation/conflict resolution strategies, <strong>and</strong> enhancing<br />
positive self-direction. Emphasis in implementation of a behavior<br />
