drastically reduce pollution result5-q from accidents; ard they apply to<br />

existing as well as new t3nkers.<br />

The ammbnents - b&ich aze expecWd to enter into force on 6 July<br />

1993 - will add t-do new regulations to Annex I.<br />

Regulation 13F deals with new tankers of 600 dwt arrA above. These<br />

are tankers for whit!! the building contract is placed after 6 July 1993;<br />

the keels of which are laid on or after 6 January 1994; or which are<br />

delivered on or after 6 July 1996.<br />

Tankers of 5,000 dwt and abve must be fitted with double battcnas<br />

ard wing tanks exte&bg the full depth of the ship's side. ?he<br />

regulation allawsmid-deckhei~ttankerswithdouble-sidedhulls, su&as<br />

those developed by Japanese and European shiptilders, as an alternative<br />

to double hull ccnstruction.<br />

Ctherxethais of design andcmstructionmay alsobeaccepted<br />

provided that they ensure t!!e same level of protection against pollution<br />

jn the event of a collision cr stranding. Tbesedesignmethodsmustbe<br />

apprwedby theKEG based on quidelinesrYhich are to bedevelopedby DO.<br />

Oil +&ers of 600 dwt and alive lilt less than 5,000 dwt, must be<br />

fitted witi double bttcm tanks and the capacity of each cargo tank is<br />

Xmitedto 700 cubicmetres, uniess they are fittedwithdoublehulls.<br />

Requlation EG is conderred with existixq crude carriers of 20,000<br />

dwt and above and existirg proAct carriers of 30,000 dwt and above. Rre<br />

regulation is expected to t&e effect from 6 July 1995.<br />

It ties prcvisicn for a.. eMaxed prcqrmm of inspections to be<br />

icglemanted, particdarly fcr -&ers which are more than five years old.<br />

Witi tie exception of ships already fittedwithdouble hulls,<br />

existinq tankers xust cmgly wit!? the requirments of 13F not later than<br />

30 years after t!!eir date of delivery. In addition, pre+mFoLtanke=<br />

mst, not later th,an 25 years after their date of delivery, provide side<br />
