Later HELCOM recommendations deal with more specific categories of losses<br />

from agriculture. The categories are:<br />

farm waste discharges; (Recommend. Wll)<br />

leaching of nitrogen, mainly nitrate; (Recommend. 13/10)<br />

leaching, run-off and erosion losses of phosphorus; (Recommend. U/10)<br />

ammonia volatilisation; (Recommend. 1317, 13/8 and 14/4)<br />

pesticides; (Recommend. 8/Z and X3/13)<br />

The Danish approach to handle the mentioned categories is described below.<br />

Introduction.<br />

The following description will give you an idea of, what has been done in<br />

Denmark over the past 30 years in order to reduce the pollution from agriculture.<br />

About 30 years ago the first environmental regulation concerning agricultural<br />

production was introduced. Rules were made for placing and construction of<br />

stables and manure storage facilities, though there was no public concern about<br />

pollution from agriculture.<br />

So until lo-12 years ago the most important goal for agricultural production was<br />

to produce large quantities of good quality products without much regard for the<br />

resulting impact on the environment.<br />

Over the past 30 years production has gone up with 50% and there has almost<br />

been a doubling of total fertilizer input to Danish arable soil, causing signifi-<br />
